Applications &
Admissions
General
Application
Requirements
For detailed information on application procedures and all required
documentation, please see the procedures section of this website. The
following provides some additional information on some of the required
documentation.
Letters of
Recommendation The faculty relies heavily on the comments and
assessments of colleagues at UCLA and other academic institutions. It also
welcomes letters from an applicant's professional supervisor or colleague.
A thoughtful and thorough assessment provides insight into the student's
abilities, motivation, and preparation in Women's Studies. Three letters
are required but more may be submitted. A printed form for these letters
appears in the application materials which can be mailed to you or which
you may download from the Graduate Division website (http://www.gdnet.ucla.edu).
Grade
Point Average The Admission Committee expects a GPA of 3.5 or
better for the junior and senior years. For a student to be considered for
admission with a GPA lower than 3.0 requires special exception.
Graduate
Record Examinations (GRE) We require the Verbal, Quantitative and
Analytical GREs, in conformity with the Graduate Division's standard
application procedure. No subject area GRE examinations are
required. Generally scores of 600
or better are expected. The Educational Testing Service (ETS) that
administers the GRE tests can be reached by phone at 609-771-7670 or by
email at gre-info@ets.org. For further
information, please see the GRE website at http://www.gre.org. To ensure that
your scores are received by our application deadline, please do not
schedule your GRE exam any later than NOVEMBER. Scheduling the GRE
exam in December will NOT allow sufficient time for your scores to reach
us.
Test of
English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) For international students
whose first language is not English, the TOEFL exam is required for a
better assessment of the student's language capability. This exam is
administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) in some 95 foreign
centers. Applications are available from TOEFL/TSE Publications, P.O. Box
6151, Princeton, NJ 08541-6151 (609-771-7670). http://www.toefl.org
Women's
Studies Supplementary Essay (Note: Required in
addition to UCLA Graduate Division's Statement of Purpose [Part C]) The Women's Studies
supplementary essay is key to the admission committee's decision. It is to
be submitted in addition to the Statement of Purpose (Part C) required by Grad
Division in the online or written application. The Women's Studies
Supplementary Essay should tell the admissions committee about your
background in and proposed focus in Women's Studies. It should also give
the committee information about your work and professional experience.
The essay
should be no more than 3 double-spaced pages and should address the
following:
- How did
you become interested in Women's Studies?
- What work
or academic experiences prompted you to apply for a graduate degree in
Women's Studies?
- In what
area of Women's Studies do you plan to specialize?
- What are
your career goals?
Additional
Writing Samples The WS admissions
committee requires additional evidence of an applicant's academic or
professional interests in the form of term papers or other written
materials. These materials should not exceed 25 double-spaced pages.
