Gabrielle M. Thomas |
Gabrielle M. Thomas is a student in the Department of Women’s Studies. Her research interests focus on the psychosocial development of the adolescent female and the issues that teen girls face in today’s society. After graduating from high school, she received a license as an aesthetician and went on to study advanced skin therapy at Steiner in London. She started My Beauty Inc. to help empower girls through workshops on goal setting, money matters, college planning, healthy eating, fitness, fashion, make-up not fake-up, and etiquette. More than two thousand girls have participated, and the goal is to reach millions worldwide. Wanting to lead by example and set a standard of academic excellence, Thomas enrolled in college when she was 23 and will receive her B.A. at the age of 27. Her goal is to continue her studies and receive an M.A. in Education from Harvard. |

Shirelle Ruby Alexander |
Shirelle Ruby Alexander is an undergraduate at UCLA. Although working full-time since the 1970s, she has been taking college classes with a strong determination to finish her degree. Because she’s worked for so many years, Shirelle has the maturity to understand the more subtle benefits of a degree. As she describes it, “I know the value of a structured educational background. I understand now that it’s not just about academic aspects, but it’s also about presentation, discipline, leadership, and organizational skills. These attributes are fine-tuned in an academic setting.” Best of luck to you, Shirelle, as you pursue your post-degree goals as an advocate for the LGBTQ population and eventually to own and operate an LGBTQ retirement center.
