Research Scholars Program
New Applicants

New applicants must be independent scholars with a Ph.D. or an equivalent terminal degree who are conducting research on women, sexuality, or gender.  Participants are selected on the basis of the quality of their proposed research and past scholarly work.  They are expected to reside in Southern California during their period of affiliation.

New applicants must submit:

  • Research Scholars Program Cover Sheet for New Applicants
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Prospectus: a 2-3 page description of the proposed research project pertaining to women, sexuality or gender, including an abstract, methodology, work plan, summary of required library collections or other resources, and research/project goals for the year of application. The Prospectus should include all the elements listed below in order:
    1. Abstract (a succinct two to three paragraph summary of your current research project)
    2. Methodology (a brief description of how you will pursue your research and determine your findings)
    3. Work plan (the overall plan for completion of your research project and the long-range goals for academic presentation and publication of the research findings)
    4. Summary of required library collections or other resources (List the resources at UCLA and other institutions or organizations required to complete your research project)
    5. Research project goals for the year of application (Provide a realistic summary of what you will achieve during the academic year in terms of your research project.  A well researched and written article can take a year or more to complete.  Keep this in mind as your summary will be an important part of the committee review if/when you renew your application.)
  • Letter of Recommendation

The deadline to submit applications is Thursday, May 14, 2009 at 5:30 PM.

Renewing Affiliation

Yearly renewal is required for all Research Scholars and is contingent upon evidence of progress on the research project.  Lack of progress in a particular year will result in provisional status.  After two years with no demonstrable progress on the research project, the renewal application will be declined automatically.  Over a two-year period, evidence of progress includes publication of an article or book, presentations at scholarly or professional conferences, advanced drafts, manuscripts or other research products under consideration by reputable entities, a substantive contribution to a university or a field of research, or similar criteria.

Renewing applicants must submit:

  • Research Scholars Program Cover Sheet for Renewal
