The Center for the Study of Women (CSW) makes a substantial effort to diminish our impact on the environment by reducing our consumption and using our resources wisely. CSW is committed to advancing sustainability in our office, at UCLA, and beyond campus. Through responsible purchasing, recycling, and energy and paper reduction, CSW has created a sustainable environment for our Center’s student and staff employees. By making small changes, it quickly became apparent that “going green” is not only easy, it is also cost effective; it enables us to save resources and money simultaneously. We would be happy to give a one-time consultation for other campus units that are interested in going green.
Here are ways the Center incorporates sustainability into its daily functions:
REDUCE
Paper
- Organize and maintain files electronically to minimize paper printouts and waste
- Use 100% post-consumer waste recycled paper (Boise Aspen 100 Multi-Use Paper 8-1/2" x 11" Model No. 054922)
- Select print preview before printing emails and web pages to see whether to print the final page
- Print double sided, reduce font size, and decrease margins to fit more text on fewer pages
Toner/ Ink
Energy
- Turn off all lights and power strips at the end of each day
- Use motion detectors for overhead lights
- Use natural light and shades to regulate light and temperature
- Purchase EnergyStar appliances and machines
- Encourage guest speakers to take the Flyaway bus and public transportation
- Commute to campus by bike, bus, carpool or vanpool
- Approach Facilities if you have an idea for energy savings—we lobbied to get a shade tree planted outside an office window that gets full sun and it is now providing shade there.
Products
- Use compostable utensils, plates, plastic bags and cups (worldcentric.org)
- Use 100% recycled napkins and paper towels
- Use large Arrowhead 2.5 gallon jugs instead of individual plastic bottles at events
- Donate old furniture to non-profit group, LA Shares (www.lashares.org/)
- Use non-toxic, environmentally safe cleaner
- Use our nifty bicycle to get around campus!

REUSE
- Use scrap paper for rough drafts or working copies of documents
- Use scrap paper for note taking
- Use mugs or glasses for beverages instead of disposable cups
RECYCLE
- White paper
- Mixed paper and cardboard
- Plastic, glass, aluminum
- Electronics, CDs, and hazardous materials
